Sensory bins are a fantastic way to engage your toddler’s senses and help them explore the world around them. One of the most simple yet versatile sensory bin ideas is a rice sensory bin. Not only is it fun, but it also offers endless opportunities for learning and play. Here’s everything you need to know about creating a rice sensory bin for your toddler and how it can help with their development.
Supplies:
Uncooked Rice – I colored it two shades of pink.
A Bin – You can use a plastic container, large tray, or a shallow bin, anything that gives your child enough space to explore. I used the Ikea flisat table.
Alphabet letters - I used Learning Resources Uppercase Lacing Alphabet
Small Toys and/or Objects – You can add spoons, measuring cups, funnels, etc. Anything that might intrigue your toddler and encourage them to dig and explore.
Paper with alphabet written out (I just wrote mine out but you could also print one out and laminate if you want it to be sturdier for re-use)
To color the rice:
Pour rice into a bag
Add a bit of vinegar (I use about 1.5 TBSP for 3 cups of rice)
Add food coloring
Shake, shake, shake
Pour onto a cookie sheet to dry (I let it sit overnight)
Benefits of a Rice Sensory Bin:
Fine Motor Skills: Toddlers will use their hands to scoop, pour, and grasp the rice. These actions are excellent for building hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, which are crucial for activities like writing and dressing.
Sensory Development: The texture of the rice provides a great tactile experience. This type of sensory play helps toddlers explore different textures, aiding in sensory development and awareness.
Cognitive Skills: Through play, toddlers can learn cause and effect (like how pouring rice into different containers sounds or looks). You can also introduce counting, sorting, and color identification with different objects.
Creativity & Imagination: With the right toys, toddlers can create their own stories and scenarios. Whether they’re pretending to feed animals, build rice castles, or explore the textures, their imagination will flourish.
Calming Effect: Sensory bins like this one can also have a calming effect, especially if your child enjoys repetitive motions like scooping and pouring. The tactile activity can help them focus and relax.
Tips for Success:
Supervision: Always supervise your toddler during sensory play, as rice can be a choking hazard if ingested.
Make Cleanup Easy: Rice can scatter easily, so play on a surface that's easy to clean, or keep a vacuum handy for quick cleanup. I also lay out a Gathre mat to make clean up faster. You could also use a tablecloth or sheet.
Encourage Exploration: Don’t direct your toddler too much. Let them explore on their own and follow their own curiosity. You can guide them with prompts, but let them lead the way.
Use It for Multiple Activities: After a few sessions of free exploration, you can introduce new concepts such as sorting colors or counting the rice in small containers.
